The Placer Food Bank: A Hunger Relief Resource for 50 Years

The Placer Food Bank has been serving the communities of El Dorado, Placer, and Nevada counties for the past five decades. As a designated Feeding America Food Bank, they are part of a network comprising over 200 food banks nationwide, enabling them to bring additional resources to the areas they serve. With over 50,000 individuals and 14,000 children experiencing food insecurity in these counties, the Placer Food Bank plays a crucial role in ensuring their neighbors in need receive the sustenance they require.

Dealing with the Challenges of the Pandemic and Inflation

The pandemic and rising inflation have undeniably posed significant challenges for many families and individuals. The Placer Food Bank has witnessed an increase in the demand for hunger relief in the community, not only from those who are food insecure but also from working families struggling to make ends meet amidst soaring grocery bills. To address this, the Placer Food Bank organizes “pantry to go” distributions at ten locations in Placer and El Dorado counties. These drive-through distributions provide families of all backgrounds with much-needed food every month, helping to alleviate the strain caused by rising prices.

Supporting the Placer Food Bank: What’s Needed for the Holiday Season?

To ensure the success of their mission during the holiday season, the Placer Food Bank relies on various forms of assistance. While in-person community food drives were halted in 2020 due to COVID-19, the organization has set up an online virtual food drive on their website, Banking Blog. Here, you can make monetary donations that enable the Placer Food Bank to purchase wholesale groceries. With every dollar donated, they can buy $20 worth of food, providing 10 meals in the process. For a $50 donation, you can help provide 500 meals to those in need.

Beyond Monetary Contributions: Volunteering and Partnerships

Apart from financial support, the Placer Food Bank greatly values the contributions of its dedicated volunteers. With over 2,000 volunteers who collectively logged over 13,000 hours of service last year, their assistance in packing and preparing food boxes for the “pantry to go” distributions is crucial. Additionally, the Placer Food Bank collaborates with over 80 hunger relief partners throughout the three counties they serve. These partnerships ensure that food received from retail partners is efficiently distributed to communities in need.

Joining Hands to Nourish Communities

As we continue to face increasing levels of hunger, especially during the winter months, it is vital to bolster emergency food response efforts and maintain sufficient food inventory. The Placer Food Bank plays a pivotal role in meeting these challenges head-on. With their impactful initiatives and the collaborative support of ABC 10 and organizations like ours, we can make a real difference in the lives of individuals and families in need.

To learn more about how you can contribute and make a positive impact, please visit Banking Blog. Together, let’s fill the gap and stand united against hunger. Remember, every dollar you donate equals five meals for those who would otherwise go without during this holiday season. While we may not be able to end hunger entirely, we can certainly make a difference in the lives of others.
